| Offset Printing Looking for an Offset Printer?
Offset
printing refers to the Offset Lithographic process. There are two parts
to this process. The Lithographic or chemical process and the physical
process of offsetting the image from plate to blanket and blanket to
paper. By blanket we mean a rubber coated cotton carcass which 'straps'
around a cylinder. The rubber allows for good transfer from the hard
aluminium printing plate. It also provides good transfer to paper.
The
Lithographic process is based on the fact that oil and water repell
each other. The printing plates that we use in Lithography have
an 'image area' and a 'non-image area'. The image area is
oleophyllic or 'oil loving' which is what ink basically is. The
non-image area is hydrophyllic and is 'water loving'.
We
apply water using rollers to the 'plate cylinder' at high speed and
then apply ink and when the ink/water balance is in good equillibrium
we get ink in only the image area and water in only the non-image area.
This produces a quality print. But if there is too much water, we
get water in the image area and if we don't have enough water we get
ink in the non-image area. Neither are desirable results.
So that's a basic primer on Offset Lithography! Boring huh? Yeah.
